FOCUS-LK 2018: Managing the Oceans and Boosting the Blue Economy

FOCUS-LK 2018, an initiative of the Embassy of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, in collaboration with the French Development Agency (AFD), Alliance Française de Kotte, the Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL) , presented the project proposal developed on the theme “Managing the Oceans and Boosting the Blue Economy” At an event held yesterday,  the 10th of May 2018 at the Blue Room, Hilton Hotel, Colombo 02.

The focus of this project, is the sustainable management of coastal and marine resources falling under the stretch – Vakarai to Batticaloa on the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka – with the aim of developing and sustaining coastal communities and economies, as, one of the major challenges faced by Sri Lanka is known to be natural resource management. The Batticaloa district within which this project area falls, comprises a variety of marine and coastal habitats including sandy beaches, lagoons, estuaries, corals reefs and rocky reefs.

The three objectives of this project are as follows:

  • The establishment of a reliable research database for policy formulation and resource management
  • The improved management of coastal and marine resources
  • Support towards sustainable local livelihoods and increase of awareness amongst stakeholders

This project will be officially presented to the public, during a high level seminar scheduled for the 17th of May 2018, in the presence of a number of dignitaries and professional representatives from the government, diplomatic, non-government, private and academic sectors.
