Dengue mosquito menace Simple Alternatives HIGHLIGHT

Dengue is now centre stage in the Newspapers, Radio and on TV.
However, the whole focus is on prevention – and rightly so But perhaps there are other approaches that have not been presented to the public and perhaps this letter could be used or more effectively in an editorial, to bring it to the notice of the public.

But first let us look at the facts.
A week or so ago, it was reported in the Dally Mirror that Government researchers had found that there are now two mosquito types that carry the virus and that the Dengue-causing mosquitoes have also developed a resistance to the chemicals used in fogging and in drains.
It is of course well known, that insects are able to develop resistance to chemical pesticides.
So, if Mosquitoes can develop resistance to chemicals, we too can increase our NATURAL resistance to viral diseases. It is actually quite simple but we need to take action to increase our resistance (like taking action to go jogging for our health).

Action to be taken: (1) Daily eat 5 or 6 leaves of RAW Holy Basil (Thulasi in Tamil, Maduruthala in Sinhala) in Mallums or salads as it is an “adaptogen” a bio-chemical that increases resistance to viral diseases (See attached article – from www.mercola.com) (2) Reduce and if possible eliminate foods that lowers your resistance to disease, such as refined white sugar (basically a chemical like any lab chemical), and therefore uses up vital minerals in order to be digested, lowering disease resistance, bone loss in older people etc.
Use alternatives like Kitul or Coconut jaggery or treacle (pani).  (3) Reduce and if possible eliminate white flour products because they contain “Gluten” which also lowers resistance and even promotes ill health. (4) We all know that many farmers use chemical fertilizers and pesticides and we know from Facebook and you-tube that other local and imported food products too have chemicals.
So choosing Organic foods may be wise even though it may be more expensive.

With regard to the problem of resistance to Fogging Chemicals, a simple natural alternative is to use Neem (Kohomba) oil. This has to be mixed with a little detergent (such as dish-washing liquid) to counteract the “oiliness, so that it could be used as a spray. Unlike chemicals (which have a single chemical that kills), Natural insecticides have an arsenal of different bio-chemicals which is why insects cannot easily develop resistance to them For stagnant water in drains etc. (blocked by people using drains as rubbish dumps) , a simple and inexpensive alternative is to use waste engine oil. The oil forms a film on the surface and mosquito larvae in the Pupal Stage (when they are shaped like a “comma”) are air breathers and come to the surface to breath air. The oil blocks their breathing tube on the top of the “comma” and they die.

Court extends ban on dumping garbage in Muthurajawela

The Supreme Court on Thursday extended the order prohibiting the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) from disposing garbage at Muthurajawela till July 25.

A petition was filed by several residents in the area seeking a court order against the disposal of garbage collected from the city of Colombo at the Muthurajawela site.

The petition states that waste is being disposed in Muthurajawela despite the area being named an Environmental Conservation Zone, and that this has resulted in several environmental and health issues surfacing.

On July 05, the court had issued an injunction order prohibiting the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) from disposing garbage in Muthurajawela till today (July 20).

Sand mining a major problem

Illegal sand mining has become major problem in the Northern Province. A shortage of sand is prevailing in the North as several construction projects are in progress. Due to this, the price of sand has shot up.

One tipper of sand which was purchased at Rs 17,000 during the pre-2009 period, now costs Rs 40,000, affected people said.

Sand is being continuously mined in Thoththavadi, Illupaikadavai, Koorai, Madu, Palampidy, Aruvaiyaaru and Kallaru in Mannar.

The additional District Secretary of Mannar said that the Department of Geology in Anuradhapura has issued permits to mine sand in these areas.

However, people have faced several problems when mining for commercial purposes in breach of conditions laid down in the permits.

Meanwhile, although no permits have been issued for sand mining on the Jaffna-Thenmarachchi- Kachchai beach, large scale sand mining is conducted during the night hours.

People have further expressed their concerns over sand mining to a depth lower than the Mean Sea Level, as the villages close by are facing a risk of sea erosion. It has been pointed out that the Government should intervene. (MT)

Responding to the Cabinet’s approval of banning the production, sale and use of lunch-sheets, polythene and Styrofoam/Rigifoam, the Colombo Municipality (CMC) yesterday said the move would reduce at least one third of the waste collected in the city.

The CMC Waste Management Director Ms. Yogarani Sylvester speaking to the Daily Mirror said the ban would be the only solution to tackle the non-recyclable waste collected within the city.

“Lunch sheets are not things that we can recycle nor are they degradable. Most of these lunch sheets and Styrofoam/ boxes in which lunch is sold are soiled so they can’t be reused. This is a major problem as we can’t do anything with them,” she said.

While the move does not mean the garbage problem in the city would be completely resolved it would have a significant impact on the garbage in the city. “People will start to reuse what they have, which is a significant decrease in the amount of garbage that is collected as we come back with at least 20 polythene bags when we go to the super market when we can just use two,” Ms. Sylvester stated.
The proposal by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) will see the ban of lunch sheets, polythene and Styrofoam banned from September with authorities expected to introduce and promote degradable polythene and bags to the public.

The media also reported that the import and production of lunch sheets, containers, plates, cups and spoons made of polythene and the sale of cooked meals in polythene containers and the burning of plastic in open areas will be prohibited.

Authorities will also take measures to introduce and provide paper, cloth, reed bags or bio-degradable plastic.

Leopard saved from Gampola estate

A hill country leopard facing death after getting caught in a wire mesh trap laid in a tea plantation in Angurumulla Millagahamula, Gampola was rescued by wildlife officers and veterinarians.

Earlier four leopards died getting caught in similar traps laid in this region. The rescued leopard a female of five feet was taken to the Nuwara Eliya wildlife office.

This particular leopard which had broken away from the trap with part of the wire strapped in the neck struck around tea bushes had been spotted by two tea pluckers who arrived in the morning.

After they alerted the neighbouring residents they had got in touch with an animal lover named Gunaratne who in turn had alerted the Zoologists’ Association of Sri Lanka. Wildlife Minister Gamini Jayawickreme Perera had intervened to dispatch the rescue team to save the life of the leopard.

Leopards straying into the estates very often get caught in wire traps laid by poachers with bicycle and three wheeler cables laid to hunt wild boar and other game.

The rescue Wildlife team was led by OIC Wimalaratne of the Nuwara Eliya Wildlife office together with veterinary surgeons Dr Kamani Dedunupitiya and Dr Yvonne Gunawardena.

Shortage in drinking water in Vavuniya

Action has been taken to grant immediate relief to the people of the Vavuniya area facing a disastrous situation due to a water shortage as a result of the drought.

The drought being experienced in Vavuniya is inconveniencing people of 102 Grama Seva Divisions.  The people of the area claim that they had to traverse several kilometers to meet their drinking water needs. The drought conditions have devastated many cultivations in the area.

Vavuniya District Secretary M.B.R. Pushpakumar said that measures have already been taken to sort out the drinking water issue of the people of his Division.

The District Secretary said that the area is encountering a serious drinking water issue as the due rainfall had not been experienced.

Already they are providing drinking water to 670 families. They are also looking into other villages that are facing a drinking water issue. He was of the view that if the drought situation continues to persist they would certainly experience difficulties in the supply of water and if so they would look into alternate methods of finding water.

Minister plunders forest for votes Authorities opt to remain silent – Nirmalanathan

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian Charles Nirmalanathan has regretted that a minister was destroying the flora and fauna in the Mullaitivu district to make new settlements in order to strengthen his vote bank.

He was speaking during a mass protest in Mullaitivu against the setting up of new settlements by destroying the forest cover in the region.

The protest drew in large crowds from Jaffna as well who joined hands with the civilians in Mullaitivu against the ongoing deforestation to make way for fresh settlements.

MP Nirmalanathan said: “There are a multitude of allegations against this minister in regard to the deforestation activities in Mullaitivu and so far the District Secretary, Forest Department and police have refrained from taking any legal action against this deforestation.

If an individual fells a tree in his/her own premises the matter will be instantly notified to the local Grama Sevaka and the police would also file action.

However when around 300 acres of forest cover is been destroyed in Mullaitivu none of the relevant authorities are ready to take any action.

When we questioned the District Secretary about this activity she said she was unaware.

The deforestation first began in Kulamurippu in the Mullaitivu District. According to Forest Department statistics, around 300 acres of forest lands have been destroyed in the Mullaitivu region. In the initial stages when we agitated against the deforestation activities, Mullaitivu District Secretary Rupavathy Ketheeswaran released a statement claiming that she was unaware about the issue.

However these 300 acres are within 7 kilometres from the Mullaitivu District Secretariat. The District Secretary has not taken any legal action in this regard even today. At the last Mullaitivu District Coordinating Committee meeting held early this month, I questioned the District Secretary regarding the action she had taken regarding the deforestation activities taking place in the Mullaitivu District. I also questioned her to why has she distributed houses to those who already own houses in Mullaitivu.

These questions were posed at the District Secretary however Minister Rishad Bathiudeen opted to reply. He said there are limitations for the District Secretary to take action regarding certain issues.

Therefore it is quite transparent that the Mullaitivu District Secretary is partial in the deforestation issue and therefore she has refrained from taking any legal action against the culprits”, MP Nirmalanathan said.

700,000 Families affected – DMC

An estimated 700,000 farmer families have been affected owing to the prevailing drought in 13 districts of the dry zone, the Department of Disaster Management (DMC) warned yesterday.

The country’s dry zone has not received any rainfall during the past seven months. In addition to that, a weak North-East monsoon with insufficient rain in October 2016 also contributed to the present situation, officials with the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management said.

Irrigation Director (Water Management and Training) Wasantha Bandara Palugasweva told Ceylon Today that the water levels in all major reservoirs had declined to 19 per cent.

He said due to this only 50 per cent of paddy fields could be cultivated during the past Yala Season with water from reservoirs and tanks coming under the purview of the Department of Irrigation.

He warned that if the anticipated rainfall fails during the North-East monsoon that is expected in September it could severely affect the cultivations during the Maha Season as well.

“The Irrigation Department owns some 395 reservoirs and tanks both large and medium scale.From that number there are 73 major reservoirs.

From all the reservoirs that come under our control some 1.5 million paddy fields are cultivated throughout the year.

But, due to the drought during the past seven months only 750000 paddy fields had been cultivated,” Palugasweva said.

Another 30 per cent of paddy fields are being cultivated through water supplied by reservoirs and tanks owned by the Mahaweli Authority.

According to Palugasweva the drought had mostly affected the North, East, North-Central and Wayamba Provinces.

The main districts involved in paddy cultivation in the dry zone are Ampara, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala and Puttalam.

The dry zone usually receives rain from the North-East monsoon that arrives in September.

He also expressed hope that the expected rains would arrive at the very earliest. However, the Department of Meteorology has warned that there will be no rain in the dry zones of the island until October.

Forest Reserves to become National Wildlife parks

Steps have been taken to develop the Kalawewa and Kahalapalla Forest Reserves as National Wildlife parks. Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera said that a special discussion in this regard would be held next week.

The Kalawewa Forest Reserve which is about 5,050 hectares, was named as a National Wildlife Park in October 2015. It is reported that 300 to 400 elephants could be seen inside this forest reserve.

It is a common sight to see elephants are coming to Kalawewa Forest Reserve from Kahallapalla, Ritigala and Habarana Forests during the drought season.

Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera said that development of Kalawewa and Kahallapalla Forest Reserve would be launched soon as a large number of local and foreign tourists are coming to view the forest reserve.
