Life To Our Coral Reefs

Joining Hands with Community Beach Caretakers

The Project Background

Explore the wonders of coral reefs, covering less than 1% of the world’s oceans but supporting 25% of marine species. In Sri Lanka, these ecosystems are the backbone of fisheries and tourism, home to diverse marine life. Specific regions, like the Gulf of Mannar and Tangalle, boast over 200 coral species and 900 fish species. While contributing significantly to marine production and revenue, these reefs face threats like overfishing and coral bleaching. Your support is crucial in preserving and restoring these vital ecosystems for the benefit of marine life and local communities. Join us in safeguarding these natural wonders.

The site - the kayankerni reef

Nestled between Panichankerni and Kalkuda in the Batticaloa District, the Kayankerni Reef is a vital marine sanctuary spanning 953 hectares. Recognized under the Fauna and Flora Protection Act in 2019, its primary mission is to preserve the coral reefs, once exploited for lime production and later popular for marine aquarium fish collection. Today, the fishing industry sustains around 37% of the local population, making it the predominant economic activity. Designated as a priority seascape by IUCN Sri Lanka, Kayankerni Reef, along with Pigeon Island and Bar Reef, will be a focal point in the Sri Lanka Coral Reef Initiative (SLCRI), featuring a multi-stakeholder co-management plan to ensure its continued protection and sustainable use.

The Problem

The Kayankerni Marine Sanctuary faces significant challenges, both human-made and natural, risking its long-term survival. Despite comparatively lower human impacts, issues such as export-oriented fisheries using damaging methods, illicit practices like explosives, accidental captures of turtles, aquaculture expansion, and natural threats like coral bleaching and invasive species pose threats. A delicate balance between conservation and sustainable practices is crucial for preserving the Kayankerni Coral Reef and its surrounding habitats.

The Project

In collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Conservation and IUCN,Biodiversity Sri Lanka and its members are introducing “LIFE TO OUR CORAL REEFS” – a Nature-based Solution (NbS) aimed at conserving reefs for the benefit of both the environment and local livelihoods. This initiative, guided by a commitment to generate multiple environmental and socio-economic benefits, seeks to bolster the resilience of coral ecosystems, enhance their renewal capacity, and sustain vital ecosystem services. The project aligns with a broader goal of fostering socio-economic development within local communities.
