Action has been taken to grant immediate relief to the people of the Vavuniya area facing a disastrous situation due to a water shortage as a result of the drought.
The drought being experienced in Vavuniya is inconveniencing people of 102 Grama Seva Divisions. The people of the area claim that they had to traverse several kilometers to meet their drinking water needs. The drought conditions have devastated many cultivations in the area.
Vavuniya District Secretary M.B.R. Pushpakumar said that measures have already been taken to sort out the drinking water issue of the people of his Division.
The District Secretary said that the area is encountering a serious drinking water issue as the due rainfall had not been experienced.
Already they are providing drinking water to 670 families. They are also looking into other villages that are facing a drinking water issue. He was of the view that if the drought situation continues to persist they would certainly experience difficulties in the supply of water and if so they would look into alternate methods of finding water.
